How Pregnant Carrie Underwood Is Staying Fit

Publish date: 2024-05-21

No bumps here! Fitness enthusiast Carrie Underwood has no plans to stop working out during her pregnancy. “We still do a lot of lunges, squats and glute work, and a lot of booty and hip work,” her trainer, Erin Oprea, reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly. “She’s doing fantastic!”

Though the “Cry Pretty” singer, 35, is known for her tough gym sessions, her Nashville-based pro tells Us they’ve cut back on the intensity until after baby. “Everyone has to be more careful with their workouts when they’re pregnant,” says Oprea. “I say keep moving and keep working out, but let’s be cautious. This is not the time to decide to lose weight or decide to get more fit, this is the time to just keep moving.”

For Underwood, already mom to 3-year-old Isaiah, that means “sumo squats and lunges all day. We still work with dumbbells — curls and shoulder presses,” says Oprea. “No high intensity workouts — no jumping, no sprints.” As long as activity is cleared by a doctor, adds the trainer, entirely halting exercise during pregnancy doesn’t do anyone favors: “Our bodies are made to move. You’re pregnant in your belly, not in your arms and booty, so keep them going!”

The Calia by Carrie Underwood creator revealed in an August 8 Instagram video that she and her husband, Mike Fisher, were expecting their second child. “Mike and Isaiah and I are absolutely over the moon and excited to be adding another little fish to our pond,” she gushed in the video. Weeks afterward, on September 16, the singer revealed on CBS Sunday Morning that she had suffered a heartbreaking three miscarriages in two years. “I got mad,” Underwood said. “I was like, ‘Why on Earth do I keep getting pregnant if I can’t have a kid?’”

Now, the Grammy winner isn’t taking her health for granted. “She works out all the way up to the end,” Oprea says of Underwood, who’s been a vegetarian for 13 years. “She did with her pregnancy with Isaiah.” Besides the aesthetic benefits — “everyone wants to still look good while they’re pregnant,” notes the pro — there are plenty of emotional rewards, too. Says Oprea, “Exercise makes you feel good. Sunshine!”
