Lara Trump Mocked on Social Media After Mar-a-Lago Concert

Publish date: 2024-06-24

Lara Trump, former President Donald Trump's daughter-in-law, has been mocked on social media after a clip of her singing to guests at Margo-a-Lago went viral.

Lara married Eric Trump, the former president's son, in 2014 at Mar-a-Lago, a luxury resort in Palm Beach, Florida, owned by Donald Trump. Lara has previously worked for Inside Edition and Fox News, and has helped out her father-in-law during his 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns. She was also seen standing with the former president as he gave a speech after winning the New Hampshire primary election last month.

Lara also released a cover of "I Won't Back Down," a 1989 hit from the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, last September, which was number 10 on Billboard's Digital Song Sales chart in early October. In addition, the former president's daughter-in-law sang the song to a room full of people in a video recently posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Ron Filipkowski, editor-in-chief of MeidasTouch and critic of Donald Trump, posted the clip on Friday night and wrote, "Lara Trump performs the hit single she ripped off from Tom Petty for her fans at Mar-a-Lago."

X users replied to Filipkowski's post, mocking Lara.

Star Wars actor Mark Hamill wrote: "I weep for Tom Petty."

"Tom Petty just rose from the grave, saw this, then died again," X user @BlueATLGeorgia posted.

X user @Rene_gadeCowboy wrote, "I hear cats from miles around were screeching in terror wondering what the hell she was tryin to sing."

"I can hear Tom Petty in my head 'Don't do me like that!'" X user @DorlandRon posted.

When Lara's cover of the song was released last year, it was slammed for being a "cheap move" after Donald Trump received a cease-and-desist letter from Petty's family for using the song at a 2020 campaign rally. Controversy around the song grew when Lara then released a new acoustic cover of it last November.

Newsweek reached out to Lara Trump and Filipkowski via X direct message for comment. It also emailed representatives listed on Petty's website for comment.

Meanwhile on Friday night, Lara shared a photo of her and her husband dressed up for the event at Mar-a-Lago in an X post. She captioned it with two green hearts.

"First Lady material right there," X user @Aku_700 commented on Lara's post.

X user @JKash00 wrote: "You both look amazing Lara!!!"
