WORLD NUMBER ONE UNABLE TO CHASE DOWN SPIETH AND VICTORY

Rory McIlroy's career grand slam was put on hold after Jordan Spieth ran away with the Masters green jacket on Sunday, signalling it may remain in his locker for some time.

Slow to find his form through the opening two rounds, McIlroy began to hit his stride on the weekend, but was unable to chase down the rampaging 21-year-old Texan despite carding a joint best final round of six-under 66.

'It is my best ever finish here,' McIlroy told reporters. 'I played the last 45 holes in 15-under par. I did a lot of things I wanted to do.

'Just left myself too much to do after 27 holes of this golf tournament. Forty on the front nine on Friday, that really left me with an uphill battle.'

He added of Spieth: 'He's been playing great for a 21-year-old, he's way more mature than I was at 21 and a hell of a golfer and a great person as well.'

Only five men, Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen, have a complete set of four majors on their resumes and after yesterday, McIlroy may find it more difficult adding his name to the elite list.

Spieth was yesterday crowned the youngest Masters winner since Tiger Woods following a spectacular, record-breaking performance.

The Texan, who is now the world number two golfer after Rory McIlroy, was awarded the coveted green jacket after achieving 18-under par with a final score of 70 - the same score that gave Woods his first green-jacket 18 years ago - and setting new standards for the 36 and 54 holes.

Spieth's victory comes a year after he lost a bid to become the youngest player to win the Masters. This year, he did not let anyone get closer to him than three shots following his record start. He closed with a 2-under 70, missing a 5-foot par putt on the final hole that would have set another record.

'It's awfully impressive,' McIlroy said of the young star, after finishing fourth. 'It's nice to get your major tally up and running at an early stage in your career. It's great to see, great for the game, and I'm sure there will be many more.' Spieth also beat out the likes of Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose.

Rose, who finished on 14-under, had nothing but praise for the 21-year-old champion. 'Jordan is just so comfortable with the lead. Awesome composure, every time I thought maybe there was a chink in the armour, he'd come out and hole an eight-foot putt,' he told reporters.

'There's many players in the Tiger era who have rued when Tiger won it by 15 or 12. Ernie Els, for example, could have won a bunch more major championships if it wasn't for one guy. Jordan seems to have that same quality right now.'

He added: 'I was really happy with the way I felt on the golf course, how composed I was and how in control of my emotions I was.'

Spieth, who finished four shots clear of the field, has now become the first wire-to-wire winner at the Masters since Raymond Floyd in 1976, and the second youngest Masters winner of all time. Following his win, he was given his green jacket by multiple major golf champion, Bubba Watson

On the advice of his father, he also did a lap of honour for all the patrons around the 18th green. Speaking in the Butler cabin, Speith said the win 'was really great to share that experience with my family who weren't there any of the couple of times I had one so to be at this one was special.'

And when asked what was next for him, having fulfilled a life-long ambition, he replied: 'I want to be like Bubba (Watson), I want to win two Masters!

He continued: 'I'm excited already to come back, I'm excited for the opportunity ahead this year to be the reigning Masters champion, I know that's going to carry a heavy weight with it and I hope to be ready for it.'

Spieth grew up the oldest of three siblings to Shawn and Chris Spieth.

Steven, Spieth's younger brother, is an athlete as well, and plays basketball for Brown.

Then there is his youngest sibling Ellie, who was born with a neurological disorder that places her on the autism spectrum, and who has played the biggest role in shaping her brother's career according to Spieth's mother, particularly when it comes to the young superstar staying so grounded.

'Jordan wouldn't be where he's at today if he didn't grow up with Ellie,' said Mrs. Spieth in an interview with ESPN

'Jordan realizes this isn't real life at the Masters. Trying to sit around and have dinner when his sister doesn't want to eat when everybody else is eating and has a fit, that's real life.'

Spieth on his own website has said; 'Being Ellie's brother humbles me every day of my life.'

It is for this reason he set up the Jordan Spieth Charitable Trust, which focuses on special needs youth, and was inspired by Ellie.

'She's the funniest member of our family,' says Spieth of Ellie.

'I really love when she's able to be out there, love spending time with her. It's humbling to see her and her friends and the struggles they go through each day that we take for granted -- their kind of lack of patience or understanding, where it seems easy for us and it's not for them.'

He then added; 'But at the same time, they are the happiest people in the world, and when I say they, I speak to special-needs kids. And my experience with her and in her class and with her friends, it's fantastic. I love being part of it and helping support it.'

MASTERS 2015 FINAL SCORES

1. Jordan Spieth, USA, 18 under par

2 . Phil Mickelson, USA, 14 under par

2. Justin Rose, England, 14 under par

4. Rory McIlroy, Northern Ireland, 12 under par

Spieth began gaining notice in the golf world when he was just a teenager, becoming the only American besides Woods to claim two US Junior Amateur titles after winning in 2009 and 2011.

As a result of his accomplishments in junior play, he even gained entry into a PGA event, becoming the sixth youngest player to ever make the cut when at just 17-years-old he began the third sound in the PGA Tour's HP Byron Nelson Championship, ultimately finishing in an impressive tie for 16th place.

Soon after he decided to attend University of Texas, leading them to the NCAA Championship in his first year and getting to play in the US Open in 2012, where he finished as low amateur.

He left however during his sophomore year, and by the end of the 2013 season found himself 10th on the PGA Tour money list, winning the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, an honor also won by Woods.

This after he became the fourth youngest winner in PGA history after taking the John Deere Classic when he was just 19-years-old and was selected by golfing great Fred Couples to play in the 2013 Presidents Cup.
