Granelli refers to it as “the largest tragedy in professional wrestling history,” and it is certainly among the most tragic tales in the history of popular culture.

Five of his six sons had passed away before the family patriarch, Jack Adkisson, also known as Fritz Von Erich, passed away in 1997 at the age of 68.

It has been dubbed “the Von Erich curse” for a reason.

Granelli asserts that the narrative is more than just a sobering account of a business that brought about the ascent and descent of a whole family. Scratch beneath the surface, and you’ll find something more complex. 

A strict father with extremely high standards and expectations. Sons who, despite the pain, felt compelled to meet them. And it was all happening at a time and in a field where vulnerability in a man was viewed as a liability rather than a strength. 

Granelli wants the Von Erich curse to stem from a complex network of trauma, familial ties, and masculinity. This is what he believes will be the main focus of the film.

“You are never going to be able to portray any vulnerability whatsoever, especially when you are being presented as a superhero to thousands and thousands of people,” says Granelli.

“It is analogous to the original sin of toxic masculinity, which maintains that because our fathers never taught us, we never learned how to express ourselves.” I get the impression that the movie will center on that concept.”
